New cars cheaper than the price of South Africa’s most expensive laptop

South Africans can buy one of 12 new vehicles for less than the most expensive laptop in the country.

To find the most expensive laptop, MyBroadband searched through the online catalogues of several reputable South African PC hardware stores.

The most expensive model we identified was the MSI Titan 18 HX AI A2XW, which boasts hardware that will make many gamers’ mouths water.

Launched in February 2025, MSI has dubbed this laptop the “unmatched desktop replacement”, offering the “perfect balance of luxury and performance.”

The Titan 18 features an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card with 24GB video memory and a 24-core Intel Core Ultra 9-285HX processor.

The cooling system allows for up to 270W peak power draw, ensuring fast performance in gaming and other processing-intensive tasks.

It also boasts an 18-inch 4K MiniLED OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate.

There is no shortage of expansion potential either, with dual USB-C with Thunderbolt 5 support, three USB-A 3.2 ports, HDMI, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Eliminating all doubt that this device is aimed at gamers is the built-in keyboard with SteelSeries Cherry mechanical switches and an RGB-backlit trackpad.

While you are unlikely to do a lot of gaming on the Titan 18 while not plugged into a power outlet, it has the biggest battery capacity legally allowed on commercial airlines.

All this hardware is packed in a premium magnesium-aluminium chassis.

From Evetech, pricing for the latest Titan 18 started at R144,999 when configured with 64GB DDR5 RAM and a 4TB NVME SSD.

That makes the entry-level option R51,500 more expensive than the top-end Apple MacBook Pro in South Africa.

The RAM on the Titan can upgraded to as much as 96GB, while storage can be increased to 32TB. For a system with these components, an Evetech customer will need to fork out R230,999.

The table below summarises the specifications of the most expensive laptop in South Africa.

MyBroadband has previously found numerous used cars selling for less than or around the same price as the country’s most expensive smartphone, graphics card, and tablet.

The laptop’s price tag is much higher than those products.

The most affordable cars in the country — the Toyota Vitz and Suzuki S-Presso — can be had for R50,000 less than the most expensive Titan configuration.

You could buy one of these cars and still have enough money left over for a highly-capable gaming laptop with an RTX 4070 graphics card and fast AMD or Intel processor.

Alternatively, you could also pair your Vitz or Espresso with a 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro processor, 24GB memory, and 512GB storage.

Below are 12 cars with starting prices below that of the most expensive laptop in South Africa.
