MTN explains fibre price increases

MTN has explained that a price increase implemented by its fibre ISP was higher than indicated in a notice sent to customers in April because it had been undercharging customers since October 2023.
The network operator notified subscribers on its 250/250 Mbps Metrofibre package that their monthly fees would increase by no more than R10 on 1 June 2025.
However, MTN Fibre customers reported that their June invoice had increased by R110, from R799 to R909.
MTN launched a new fibre Internet service provider (ISP) in October 2023 called MTN Fibre, offering broadband services at aggressive prices.
Under the hood, MTN Fibre uses SuperSonic, a fibre infrastructure provider and ISP that MTN acquired in November 2016 for a cash consideration of R220 million and a deferred consideration of R12 million.
SuperSonic was known as Smart Village until August 2018, when MTN rebranded the company as part of a significant overhaul of its operations.
MyBroadband has tested MTN Fibre since December 2023, when we signed up for the remarkably well-priced R799 per month Metrofibre 250/250 Mbps package.
Metrofibre notified ISPs in April that it would increase its prices from 1 August 2025. MTN sent its notice to customers about forthcoming price increases shortly after.
While it was surprising that MTN’s increase would take effect two months early, many customers did not mind, given MTN Fibre’s excellent prices.
However, when customers received their June invoices, they found that the price increase was substantially higher than MTN had warned it would be.
When asked how widespread the issue was and whether only a subset of customers had been given incorrect information about their price increases, MTN explained that a small number of subscribers were affected.
“Please note that you are one of 237 customers, representing less than 0.004% of our customer base, who were undercharged for the Metrofibre 250/250 product,” an MTN spokesperson said.
MTN explained that it changed its list price for that product in October 2024, roughly a year after MTN Fibre launched.
“In June 2025, Supersonic implemented a R10 price increase to the 250/250 package, moving the list price from R899 to R909,” said MTN.
“However, due to an oversight, 237 customers were still being charged R799. These customers were corrected to the list price of R909 in June.”
MTN explained that the communication sent at the time incorrectly stated that the increase would be R10, when in fact it was R110.
“We sincerely apologise for this error,” said MTN. “To address the miscommunication, Supersonic will be crediting affected customers with R300, covering R100 each for the June, July, and August invoices.”
MTN said this would give customers enough notice for the price change taking place later in the year.
“We will be sending formal communication to all impacted customers this week and next week,” MTN said.
“As you rightly noted, MFN will implement their own price adjustments in August 2025, which may result in further changes to your service pricing beyond the current R909.”
MTN Fibre 3-month promotion

Subscribers affected by the recent price increase may wish to make use of MTN’s “save up to R900 over 3 months” promotion.
The promotion, which runs from 1 June 2025 to 31 July 2025, offers new and existing MTN Fibre customers a discount on their monthly fees.
Customers on packages of 50Mbps or lower will receive a R200 per month discount, whereas those on faster services receive R300 off per month for three months.
The promotional price applies for the first three months of a new activation or upgrade. The price reverts to the prevailing list price from the fourth month onwards.
MTN warned that the offer may not be available on all fibre network operators and that interested subscribers should use its coverage map to check available deals.
The terms and conditions state that any customer who cancels within 12 months of equipment installation will be charged a fixed one-off equipment installation recovery fee of R899.
Existing customers who have upgraded to the promotion cannot downgrade their package for 12 months from the date of promotion activation.
Downgrades after the 12-month period will be permitted, based on existing fibre-to-the-home migration rules.
